ENVIRONMENTAL
PRACTICES
In 2001 Apollo developed an Environmental Management System (EMS) that was specific to its woodlands operations in Fort St. James. A year later, Apollo's EMS was third party certified by QMI to the International
Organization for Standardization (ISO 14001) standard. The ISO 14001 standard details the requirements for an EMS, enables Apollo to develop and implement an environmental policy and objectives that take into account legal and other requirements, as well as establish significant environmental aspects. The standard applies to those environmental aspects of Apollo's operations that we have control or influence over. Some of the key components of Apollo's EMS are: an environmental policy specific to Apollo's woodlands operation; standard operating procedures for harvesting, road building, silviculture, fuel storage and handling; a comprehensive spill prevention and response plan; and annual third party verification for compliance to the EMS.
Complimentary
to our ISO 14001 certification is Apollo's commitment to Sustainable
Forest Management (SFM). A Sustainable Forest Management Plan (SFMP)
is a forest-level plan that identifies locally important environmental,
social, and economic values. The SFMP lays the foundation for achieving
a sustainable flow of these values to meet the needs of present and future
generations by setting objectives, indicators, and targets for a defined
forest area. Apollo's
defined forest area (PDF) encompasses
the areas in which Apollo conducts it's forestry operations. There is
no legislated need for a SFMP and no government approval process. The
SFMP follows a set of resource values detailed in a standard developed
by the Canadian
Standards Association (CSA) - CSA-Z809-02. In January
2006, Apollo's woodlands operations relevant
to the Fort St. James SFM Plan were third party certified by QMI to the
CSA Z809-02 standard.
Supplementary to the CSA certification is the establishment of a “Chain
Of Custody” (COC) system. This COC system is used to track the
delivery of certified logs delivered to Apollo’s mill, through
to the sale of certified products (lumber, chips, etc) to the end customer.
The COC currently tracks the amount of CSA certified chips Apollo sells
for use in the production of pulp and paper products. On January 31,
2006, Apollo’s COC were third party qualified by QMI to the CSA
Chain of Custody Standard (PEFC Annex 4).
Some of the benefits Apollo has experienced from forest certification
are; certainty that Apollo’s woodlands activities are conducted
in an environmentally responsible manner; confidence in knowing that
logs delivered from Apollo’s defined forest area originate from
sustainable managed forests; the establishment of a forum by which members
of the community can provide input into local forest management; and
offer assurance to our customers that forest products from Apollo’s
facility are compliant with international forest management standards.
