ENVIRONMENTAL PRACTICES

Black BearIn 2001 Apollo developed an Environmental Management System (EMS) that was specific to its woodlands operations in Fort St. James. A year later, Apollo's EMS was third party certified by QMI to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO 14001) standard. The ISO 14001 standard details the requirements for an EMS, enables Apollo to develop and implement an environmental policy and objectives that take into account legal and other requirements, as well as establish significant environmental aspects. In the summer of 2009 Apollo Forest Products, L&M Lumber, Lakeland Mills and Winton Global decided to pool their collective woodlands operations under the brand name Sinclar Forest Products Ltd.  This new structure allows the companies allocate resources effectively and gain efficiencies by avoiding duplication within its operations.  This change allowed Sinclar Forest Products Ltd to pursue a single ISO 14001:2004, SFI 2005-2009 and Chain of Custody PEFC annex 4 certifications.  In October 2009 QMI – Sai Global audited compliance to all three of these certifications.  Sinclar Forest Products Ltd was recommended for registration to the three certifications.

Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI)

Sustainably managed forests provide many benefits to society: employment for hundreds of thousands workers, a viable tax base that supports thousands of communities, essential building and paper products, and numerous recreational opportunities.  A commitment to provide these social benefits extends to promoting human health and safety; providing employee training and education; protecting air and water quality, soil, wildlife; protecting unique resources; and communicating the benefits of the practice of sustainable forestry to the general public.  The SFI standard reflects this commitment to social responsibility through a set of principals, objectives, performance measures, and indicators.

CSA Chain of Custody (PEFC Annex 4)

The public, consumer groups and the marketplace continue to drive the demand for certified forest products originating from certified forests.  Chain of custody is the tracking of forest products originating from a registered  defined forest area (DFA) through all phases of ownership, transportation and transformation from the DFA of origin to the end consumer.

ISO 14001:2004 (EMS)

It’s purpose is to enable an organization of any type or size to develop and    implement a policy committing it to prevent pollution, compliance with legal and other requirements, and continual improvement.  The realization of this commitment will be a management system that recognizes and manages the primary environmental issues through awareness and assessment of applicable legal requirements, objectives for improvement, assigning of roles and responsibilities, competent personnel, communications, procedures,  controls and monitoring, emergency response capability, self correction, and assessment, and internal reviews.  These procedures are based on a PLAN-DO-CHECK-ACT cycle.
